Environmental

Our commitment

At Westdale we are committed to minimising the impact of our printing process on the environment. Achieving registration to the internationally recognised ISO14001 Environmental Standard signifies that we have identified our environmental impacts and have put substantial measures in place to minimise them. Embracing the ethos of this Standard enables us to ensure that we produce your literature in a way that protects and sustains the environment.

Our aim

Our aim is to remain consistent to our Environmental Policy - working continuously towards reducing our environmental impact and improving our environmental performance. Our Environmental Policy is our statement of intent to:

  • Maintain continued compliance with all relevant legislation
  • Actively reduce the risk of pollution or emissions from site activities
  • Measure and monitor our energy and material usage
  • Set and review objectives and targets to achieve continual improvement
  • Communicate with and train our employees to promote quality and environmental awareness

How do we intend to meet our policy commitments?

Our operational controls and procedures help us minimise our environmental impact. A comprehensive internal and external audit scheme ensures that we adhere to our procedures and identify any opportunities for improvement. Environmental Objectives and Targets are set against key areas of our operations - enabling us to drive continual improvement.

This year we have achieved a number of objectives and targets - a selection of which include the -

  • Reduction of waste to landfill
  • Increased use of recycled and certified paper stocks
  • Reduction of Isopropanol Alcohol in our printing processes
  • Installation of energy efficient lighting across the Group to reduce Carbon Emissions and greenhouse gases
  • Introduction of a Waste Minimisation Scheme
  • Installation of central compressors - removing multiple compressors has improved energy efficiency and carbon emissions
  • Increased recycling activity - installation of multiple Bailers on site has allowed efficient collection and recycling of all our cardboard and polythene packaging

Employee involvement - the company currently employs over a hundred people in a variety of roles across the group. We believe that the co-operation of all employees is necessary to achieve quality of service, protect the environment and meet legal obligations. A comprehensive training programme ensures that all our staff receive quality and environmental training to increase their awareness and improve performance. Employees are encouraged to suggest new or innovative ways of approaching quality and environmental issues.

FSC & PEFC - Sustainability

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes are independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisations, founded to promote sustainably managed forests through two key aspects - forest management and Chain of Custody. These organisations provide an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

What is Chain of Custody?

  • The chain-of-custody is the path which products take from the forest to the consumer, including all manufacturing, transformation and distribution links
  • Chain-of-custody certification verifies that products from certified forests are not mixed with products from uncertified forests at any point in the supply chain
  • Chain-of-custody certification assures your buyers and customers that the certified goods they buy are genuinely the products of a well-managed forest
  • A secure chain-of-custody requires that certified products are identified, segregated and accompanied by appropriate documentation at all stages

Certification

Westdale Printing Group is Chain of Custody Certified. To obtain certification our organisation had to successfully demonstrate during third party audit, compliance to the requirements of the FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody Standards. Having Chain of Custody Certification allows us to promote the use of certified stocks and enable our customers to display the FSC or PEFC logo if required on their products.

Products carrying the FSC or PEFC logo assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.

Certification to these schemes demonstrates our commitment to a responsible purchasing policy and enables us to help you produce your work with environmental consideration.
